We have had a few customers reach out to us recently under the impression that septic tanks are no longer able to be installed in Toowoomba, and that they have to install a house sewerage treatment plant / bio-cycle system instead. This is not the case, septic systems are still able to be installed within the Toowoomba Regional Council boundaries, provided that you meet design requirements. I.e. are not too near to a water catchment area and that you have a suitable space for the required drainage field.
There are distinct differences and advantages to both septic tanks and sewerage treatment plants, so it is often a good idea to reach out to a professional to discuss which system will best suit your property and lifestyle.
We do find however, that septic systems are not common anymore as the cost to install a traditional septic with underground trenches is usually around double that of a home sewerage treatment plant. While the running costs of a septic system are lower than a house sewerage treatment plant (with less power usage, maintenance and servicing required) there is usually approximately 15-25 years before the benefits from the initial investment are seen, so when the lifespan of septic trenches is 15-25 years, the decision to install a septic system is not usually made for financial reasons. Septic systems are now usually only used where servicing of a home sewerage treatment plant is not feasible due to the remoteness of the property.
